Who am I?
Andres Mendoza PuechMy name is Andres Mendoza Puech.
I’m a high school student from Panama. You may have seen pictures of Panama City’s skyscrapers and the Panama Canal, and you may recognize our Yankees legend Mariano Rivera. But you probably haven’t heard about the thousands of people who go through Panama risking their lives. These are not tourists. They leave their homes and families in the hopes of a better future or to flee oppression or because they fear for their lives. They come from the Caribbean or as far away as Africa or Asia. As they cross Darien’s thick jungle, they face all sorts of dangers and obstacles there. Only a minority of lucky ones complete the trip and arrive to the first town. Their stories are untold. Their voices are unheard. They don’t make headlines. Few people outside Darien know about them. I was fortunate to learn about their existence speaking with my grandfather, who has explored the region extensively and knows it well. So many questions came to mind: Who are they? Where are they from? Why are they taking these risks? What are they running away from? Where are they ultimately trying to go to? What are their stories? Since January 2017, I have had the chance to visit the Darien immigrants and hear first-hand about the hardships and hazards they had endured and witnessed in the jungle. I have continued meeting with more of them and listened to their heart-wrenching captivating stories. These are remarkable people. Their stories are inspiring, touching. Read about them and their testimonies... You may be surprised. You will definitely be moved!
