THE CROSSING
How they cross the Darien
One thing has been constant as I have interviewed these immigrants; they have all basically followed the same path to cross the Darien. After making their way through Colombia, they have all arrived close to Capurgana, on the Caribbean Sea. Although many have traveled at some point by foot, this is where the tough part begins. The red path is the crossing on foot and the longest. The blue path is on dug-out canoes down the river. The final portion of the path and marked in black is the part of the only dirt road in Darien. From here, SENAFRONT takes them west to the boarder between Panama and Costa Rica, where they continue their journey North.
